김경애의 작품 ‘사막의 꽃’

Artist Kyung Kim is having a solo exhibition at lee & lee Gallery in Los Angeles on May 2-15, 2015.
Kyung Kim worked in Korea until she moved to the U.S. three years ago. This show is her first solo exhibition in the U.S., displaying 35 artworks which embrace California’s nature on her unique hand-made traditional Korean paper canvas.

She majored in Korean painting and since then has been working on her patented Hanji canvas.

“Hanji canvas is made of 2-3 layers of uniquely kneaded traditional Korean paper upon the gesso-treated canvas. Solidly dried Hanji canvas is devoid of fungi or color change. This Hanji canvas gives a very unique texture of irregular coarse surface, which gives the paintings a more diverse expression that are different from a simple canvas or traditional Korean canvas,” she explained.

Her works shown in this exhibition contain the brilliance and beauty of California’s nature, such as: the desert, cactuses, Joshua trees, palm trees, and etc., with liberal expressions using charcoal, pen drawing, acrylic, and oil on Hanji canvas.

“Korean paintings include empty space on the canvas to show an open imagination. I hope people will enjoy these paintings with a liberal imagination beyond the frame of existing perspectives,” she added.

Kyung Kim graduated from Seoul National University and has a M.A. in Fine Art at Hong-Ik University. She had three solo exhibitions in Korea and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in both Korea and overseas.

The opening reception will be held on May 2nd at 5-7 pm at lee & lee Gallery, located in LA.

‘한지 캔버스’ 위 가주 자연… 김경애 LA 첫 작품전

화가 김경애씨가 5월2~15일 리앤리 갤러리에서 작품 전시회를 갖는다.

한국에서 활동하다가 3년 전 미국에 온 김 작가는 LA에서 처음 갖는 이번 개인전에서 전통한지에 캘리포니아의 자연을 담은 회화 35점을 소개한다.
한국화를 전공한 김 작가는 캔버스 천 위에 한지층을 덧붙여 만든 ‘한지 캔버스’를 스스로 제작, 그 위에 그림을 그리는 작업을 하고 있으며 ‘한지 캔버스’에 대한 특허도 갖고 있다.

김 작가는 “젯소 칠이 된 견고한 캔버스 위에 한지 원료를 얇게 펴고 건조한 후 2~3회 표면막 처리하여 그 위에 그림을 그리면 변색되거나 곰팡이가 생기지 않고 표면에 불특정 요철무늬가 자연스럽게 형성되어 기존의 한지 혹은 캔버스와 다른 질감을 표현해 독특한 느낌의 작품을 창조할 수 있다”고 설명했다.

이번에 선보이는 작품들은 이같은 한지 캔버스에 목탄이나 펜 드로잉과 함께 아크릴, 오일 등을 사용해 밝고 아름다운 캘리포니아의 사막, 선인장, 자슈아 트리와 팜 트리 등을 자유롭게 표현한 작품들이다.
작가는 “한지 캔버스의 여백은 과감하게 생략된 공간 등 여러 의미를 함축하고 있으나 관념의 틀을 깨고 자유롭게 느끼길 바란다”고 말했다.
서울대 미대 동양화과와 홍대 미술대학원을 졸업한 김씨는 한국의 여러 대학에서 강의했으며 3회의 개인전을 가졌다.
